Growing up in the eastern suburbs,  Margot Riley has worked in Sydney’s cultural sector for decades. With special interests in art, popular culture, photography and dress, she has written and lectured extensively and curated numerous exhibitions and displays.  

Join us for an afternoon of stories and style as Margot shares her tale of fashionable fun in the sun on Australia’s favourite beachside runway.

Signals and Sirens by “Wireless”

Embark on a journey through the airwaves as the passionate history enthusiast, operating under codename ‘Wireless‘ discusses the role of local service men and women in radio communications of World War 2. In this enthralling talk, ‘Wireless’ will illuminate the World War II RAAF’s radio intercept activity in the Southwest Pacific and its connection to Bondi.  ‘Wireless’ will delve into the art of code-breaking and signal interception, unveiling the clandestine world where every Morse code and transmission held the potential to alter major events and outcomes. It’s not just about messages; it’s about decoding the heartbeat of wartime communication.

18th April 2024, 2.00pm @ Bondi Story Room, Bondi Pavillion “Forgotten War stories and Cricket sensations” presented by Ross McMullen

Join Ross McMullin, award-winning historian and biographer, as he steps up to the crease to enlighten and entertain you about Waverley’s past. Ross is a renowned storyteller, and his latest book Life So Full of Promise features a young cricket sensation who lived at Ebley Street and lit up Waverley Park. 

Ross will be regaling us with stories from Life So Full of Promise, which also unveils a popular Sydney doctor and a brilliant barrister who was a potential prime minister. It has been shortlisted for Waverley’s national book prize, the Nib Literary Award. 

It’s his second multi-biography about Australia’s lost generation of World War I, following Farewell Dear People, which was awarded the Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian History. His other books include his multi-award-winning biography of Australia’s most famous fighting general, Pompey Elliott, and another acclaimed biography, Will Dyson: Australia’s Radical Genius.
